Write for us
The Journal is Curzon’s digital film publication. We publish articles, think pieces, filmmaker interviews and more, both for our own films and other distributors’ releases showing in our cinemas. We are passionate about cinema in all its forms – from big-budget blockbusters to low-key indies and everything in between – and we aim to share our love of motion pictures through the Journal, where we are committed to publishing articles from a diverse array of perspectives.
Pitching Guidelines
What is the Journal looking for?
- Fresh, original takes on new movies with interesting angles (e.g. ‘How Spencer Captures the True Tragedy of Princess Diana’, ‘Passing: Notes on Belonging, Community and Racial Identity’)
- In-depth analyses of filmmaking craft that break down a film’s visual language and/or wider themes for our Deep Focus strand (e.g. ‘The Cinematography of Natural Light’, ‘Creativity, Vulnerability and Persona: Sweat’)
- Filmmaker interviews – with actors, directors, screenwriters or craftspeople – either editorialised or in Q&A format (e.g. actor Virginie Efira, visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert)
- Think pieces on actors’ careers and star personas pegged to new releases (e.g. Lady Gaga for House of Gucci, Leonardo DiCaprio for Don’t Look Up)
- Q&A Debriefs – a rundown of the key talking points and general atmosphere at our live events with talent (e.g. Michael Pearce for Beast, Ben Whishaw and Aneil Karia for Surge)
We are not looking for reviews, listicles, news stories or personal essays.
All writing is paid, and commissions are usually between 700 and 1,000 words.
How do I pitch a story?
Please familiarise yourself with the Journal, and the kinds of stories we publish, before sending us any ideas. We advise that you consult our listings ahead of pitching. Since our platform is designed to further contextualise films and open up new talking points and engagement for our customers, we chiefly write about those that are playing in our cinemas. The Journal is a place of celebration, so it’s best to pitch us about the films you enjoyed.
To pitch your idea, you can either fill out the form below or email [email protected] with ‘PITCH’ and a punchy headline included in the subject line, followed by a short explanation of your story and angle. Tell us why your idea is unique and timely, and why you should be the person to write it. A couple of relevant writing samples would also be helpful.
We will contact you if your pitch has been successful; we are unfortunately unable to offer feedback on unsuccessful pitches at this time.
We look forward to hearing from you.
