On Wednesday 6 March, Curzon Home Cinema Presents… Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son. Lorna Tucker’s frank yet inspiring documentary sensitively explores the reality of people living on the streets in London, Birmingham and Newcastle, as well as those who have successfully turned their lives around. The film cleverly weaves the extraordinary individuals’ moving stories alongside an exploration of the public policies that have failed so many and led Britain to a crisis point. While the stories are deeply emotional, Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son also shines a spotlight on the positive steps we should take to ensure homelessness is no longer an inevitability. The film is an empathetic rallying cry for a more just future, and is sure to leave you galvanised and ready to take action.
Join us on Tuesday 12 March for Curzon Film’s unforgettable Samsara. Lois Patiño’s astonishing film is a transcendental experience in cinematic form. The film, unlike anything you’ve witnessed on the big or small screen, invites you to traverse time and space, across the universe and beyond. Samsara unfolds in two parts, across two continents, two cultures and two inner lives. From a Bhuddist temple in Laos, where a young man tends to a dying woman, to Tanzania, where a girl discovers a baby goat has been born, regeneration is in the air. Between these stories, Patiño’s singular vision transforms into a sensory pathway made of light and sound – to join in, all you need to do is close your eyes. Blurring the lines between one lifetime and the next, Samsara is a meditation on the journey of life and a memorably immersive experience.
And finally, on Wednesday 20 March, Curzon Home Cinema Presents… Driving Mum. Exquisitely photographed in black and white, this charming dark comedy is as captivating for its droll humour as it is for the backdrop of spectacular Icelandic landscapes. Jón (Þröstur Leó Gunnarsson) seems to have given up on life, spending his days knitting with his overbearing elderly mother (Kristbjörg Kjeld). When she suddenly passes away, Jón embarks on a road trip to honour her final wishes. Plastering his mum with make-up and propping her up in the back seat, with their adorable dog Brezhnev in tow, Jón sets off on a delightful odyssey of self-discovery – even if his mum is still nagging him from beyond the grave. Heartwarming and deliciously amusing, Driving Mum lands a pitch-perfect ending and is a must-see for fans of Aki Kaurismäki.
